Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not only his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
